The new teacher was made fun of by the children in an attempt to make her weep, but a few minutes later, an unexpected event occurred.

It has been some time since the 10th grade had a permanent literary teacher. After barely one month, one quit, while the other took maternity leave. The pupils looked at each other as Anna arrived, young, composed, and tidy: “Another one. She won’t be around for long.

Initially, the first lesson was a test.

The teacher said, “Okay, open your notebooks.”

“We didn’t bring any!” a voice shouted from the rear. Laughter.

Another sneered, “Perhaps introduce yourself before attempting to teach?”

Okay. Calmly, she said, “Anna.”

The laughter got louder. — Those glasses — just like grandma’s! — smelled like perfume from the previous century.

On their phone, someone played the sound of a donkey squealing. The class erupted in laughter. One student tossed a paper airplane at her back as she was describing something at the board.

The instructor pivoted.

Someone murmured, loud enough for her to hear, “Are you going to cry and run off like the last one?”

A loud yawn was let out by someone, and their textbook fell to the ground. Others trailed behind, with chairs creaking, books falling, and someone brazenly browsing TikTok on their tablet.

Anna then sat down on the edge of her desk and stated, quite quietly and almost casually, Her comments caused the entire class to freeze.

I wasn’t always a teacher, you know. I worked on a teen cancer ward precisely one year ago. You were their age. A few of them merely desired to survive long enough to complete their education. They valued everything, including poetry, novels, and simply having a conversation partner.

– A seventeen-year-old boy. Sarcoma is the diagnosis. He was unable to communicate anymore, so we read books aloud together.

The class became a little quieter.

Even after his fingers stopped moving, he managed to hold onto the book. “I wish I had loved books earlier,” he said. Now, all I want is to sit in a normal class. Absent an IV.

There was a noticeable quietness in the room.

The teacher went on to say, “A girl from the next room dreamed of going to school.” simply taking a seat in an actual classroom. You everyone… Acting as like life owes you something, even while you’re living their dream.

— I won’t beg you or feel sorry for you. I am aware of its value. And continue as you are if you wish to find out.

She got up, rearranged the stack of notebooks on the desk, repositioned her spectacles, and opened the register for the class. There was no sound for the remainder of the class.
