Texas Summer Camp Owner’s Heroic Final Act Amid Deadly Flood Devastation

Texas is reeling after catastrophic floods tore through 15 counties, leaving at least 82 dead — including 28 children. Among the heartbreaking losses is Richard “Dick” Eastland, beloved co-owner of Camp Mystic, who gave his life trying to save campers trapped by the raging waters.

On July 4, 2025, as flash floods surged unexpectedly through the historic Christian girls’ camp nestled along the Guadalupe River, more than 700 children faced a nightmare. At 74 years old, Eastland’s courage never wavered. Found inside an SUV with three campers he was desperately trying to evacuate, he tragically passed away en route to the hospital.

For over five decades, Dick and his wife Tweety shaped Camp Mystic into a sanctuary of faith, courage, and community. His final, selfless act embodied a lifetime of devotion to nurturing young lives — a true father figure whose legacy will never be forgotten.

Governor Greg Abbott visited the devastated region, declaring a state of disaster and promising full support to aid recovery. With over 1,000 responders on the ground and disaster zones declared across the affected counties, Texas mourns its profound loss while standing united to rebuild and heal.
